Significantly Fewer Cash Payments Nowadays

For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Swiss population has been using cash much less frequently. Mobile payments, however, are growing steadily and used almost as frequently as cash. The Swiss Payment Monitor conducted by the ZHAW and the University of St. Gallen also reveals that debit cards continue to extend their lead as the most popular means of payment.

Mobile Payments Experience Significant Growth Surge

The Swiss population is increasingly using mobile payment methods. Currently, only debit cards and cash are used more frequently for payments. Twint is used in every tenth transaction. This is revealed by the latest Swiss Payment Monitor from ZHAW and the University of St.Gallen.

Cash is once again the most commonly used means of payment

The downward trend in cash use has stopped. Around every third payment in Switzerland is made in cash. However, most of the money is spent with credit cards. This is shown by the current Swiss Payment Monitor from the ZHAW and the University of St. Gallen.

Half of the Swiss population open to "buy now, pay later" offers

Around half of the Swiss population is in principle open to hire purchase options. In a hypothetical purchase situation, however, "buy now, pay later" offers were rarely selected when there were different payment options. This is shown by the current Swiss Payment Monitor from the ZHAW and the University of St. Gallen.

Every second online payment is made on a mobile device

Around half of online payments are now made using smartphones, tablets and the like. In addition, around 30 percent of the Swiss population now use neobanks. This is shown by the current Swiss Payment Monitor from the ZHAW and the University of St. Gallen.

Credit card now the means of payment with the highest turnover


Since the beginning of the pandemic, the credit card has gained massively in importance compared to the other means of payment. In addition, contactless payment is becoming the new standard, which is also supported by the strong growth in mobile phone payments.
